Summit County
Dept of Building Standards does Ohio Building Code Review.
The Plans & Permits Center is responsible for the
distribution of plans (when required) to the following departments:
- Fire Prevention Bureau
- Zoning Department
- Environmental Engineering
- Public Utilities - Water Engineering
- Public Utilities - Backflow Prevention
- Public Utilities - Sewer Maintenance
- Public Works - Engineering Services
- Traffic Engineering
- Health Department - Food License & Sanitation
- Communications Division
Submittal Requirements for Commercial Project
Review
1. The project address or legal description of the project
for address to be assigned
2. Name, address, and telephone number for designer, owner,
and occupant
3. Estimated total project cost including labor and
materials
4. Signature of person primarily responsible for
preparation of the plans
5. Plan exam fee, which is based on the estimated cost of
the site development cost including labor and materials. This fee is to be paid at the
time of submittal. This fee covers the first three plan submittals; additional fees will
be assessed if additional plan reviews are required.
6. The number of sets and plans required are as follows:
NEW BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, EXPANSION, AND/OR
ADDITIONS
3 full sets of plans (to include site and all mechanical plans)
2 full sets for Summit County to review with a Summit County plan exam fee
1 full set of plans (without mechanicals)
4 site and underground utilities plans
(For food and/or restaurant operation - see note below)
BUILDING REMODELING AND/OR ALTERATIONS
(Interior Construction Only)
No plumbing and/or fire protection revisions:
3 full sets of plans (to include site and all mechanical plans)
(For food and/or restaurant operation - see note below)
2 sets for Summit County
With plumbing and/or fire protection revisions:
2 full sets of plans (to include site and all mechanical plans)
1 site, underground utilities, interior and exterior plumbing, and fire protection plans
2 sets of plans for Summit County
BUILDING REMODELING AND/OR ALTERATIONS
(Exterior Construction Only)
1 full sets of plans (to include site plans)
2 full sets for Summit County review
PARKING LOTS
(Additions and/or New Parking Lots)
10 site, underground utilities, grading, paving, and landscaping plans
CANOPIES AND/OR AWNINGS
(For Existing Buildings Only)
2 full sets of plans (to include site plans)
2 full sets for Summit County to review
BUILDING RAZING

Our goal for project review, after submittal of acceptable
plans to the Plans & Permits Center, is that the applicant will receive either (1) a
notice that plans are approved and ready for permit issuance, or (2) a list of corrections
which must be made and a notification to revise and resubmit plans for review and approval
by departments requesting corrections within:
FIRST SUBMITTAL:
14 working days for Alterations, Grading/Paving, and/or Additions
14 working days for New Buildings
SECOND, THIRD, ETC. SUBMITTALS:
14 working days
(This date is subject to change based on staffing
availability in various departments.)
NOTES
For food and/or restaurant operation (new construction,
remodeling, and expansion) a menu and an additional set of kitchen equipment, including
plumbing and dining room layout, is requested for review by the Health Department - Food
License and Sanitation Division. Please call (330) 375-2405 for additional review fees and
submittal requirements. ($50.00 Plan Review Fee)
A City of Akron Tax Identification Number is required to
obtain a Building Permit. Contact the City of Akron Division of Taxation at (330) 375-2039
to establish this account.
Building Permits shall not be issued until all corrections
are made and plans are approved by all departments reviewing the project.
