(09/07/09) - Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic
today invited residents and downtown workers to join him in the City of Akrons
annual memorial observance for those who died on September 11, 2001 in New York City, the
Pentagon, and on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania. The commemoration will take place Friday,
September 11, from 12:00 noon until 1:00pm at St. Bernards Catholic Church on
South Broadway at University Avenue.
There will be an introduction by Rev. Clyde Foster of St. Bernards Church. Music
appropriate to the hour of reflection and contemplation will be provided.
"In the years since 2001 we have marked this occasion with music, prayers,
readings, and speeches," said the Mayor. "This year, we just wanted to provide
an opportunity for people to remember and to commemorate in silence, as a tribute to those
who died."
This will be the ninth year that the City has sponsored a 9-11 observance. Since 2002,
the annual event has been sponsored by the Greater Akron Remembrance Coalition whose
founding members include the City of Akron, the United Way of Summit County, the Salvation
Army, and the American Red Cross - Summit County Chapter.
The Salvation Army will provide bottled water and a light (pre-packaged) snack for the
attendees, from its Canteen.
