(08/11/09) - Akron PeaceMakers, the civic and
anti-crime program founded by Mayor Don Plusquellic, is preparing for the new school year
with the 2009 Akron PeaceMakers Teen Expo this Thursday.PeaceMakers has grown to well
over 100 young people from Akron who have made a commitment to making a difference in
their community through their involvement in various programs and activities.
"This group of youngsters has so impressed me," said Mayor Plusquellic.
"The reception to this program from our kids and their parents has been
enthusiastic, and the Teen Expo is a new idea this year to step up our recruitment even
more."
The Akron PeaceMakers 2009 Teen Expo is Thursday, August 13 from 5-9 p.m. at Lock 3
Park on South Main Street next to the Akron Civic Theatre. It is free for teens 13 years
old and up, according to Billy Soule, assistant to the mayor for community relations.
Soule says teens can have fun and learn at the same time at the Expo. "We have
information on important health issues for kids, community safety, financial literacy,
community service, education and special workshops we call How to Survive High
School, and College 101," he said. (Expo Flyer)
Local experts in the various fields will be featured speakers at the Teen Expo.
There is also time for fun Thursday, according to Soule, who says therell be music,
dancing and special entertainment for the teens including Detroits Core Dance Group
and the Firestone Steppers.
