The tournament is in its 32nd season. The City signed a three year agreement with
the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Girls State Softball Championships
starting last year and running through 2010.
"The folks from OHSAA along with the families and the players have really enjoyed
playing in Akron and visiting our city," said Mayor Don Plusquellic
Dr. Daniel B. Ross, commissioner of the OHSAA, and Assistant Commissioner Roxanne Price
are in Akron for this years tournament, and have approached the citys
Tournament Manager David Suncire (sun SEER ee) from the Akron Department of Recreation
about extending the stay.
"We are so impressed with the way the city runs this event and have such great
feedback from the players and families, we started considering an extension," said
Ross.
"I plan to make a strong recommendation to the board next week to extend the
tournament in Akron another 10 years," said Ross.
Mayor Plusquellics announcement will come just before this mornings round
of play at Firestone Stadium at 10 a.m. He will state that the City would agree to a
10-year extension of the contract.
"That would put the tournament right here in our city from 2011-2020," said
Suncire. "Weve worked hard to make this the very best event
possible."
The tournament drew more than 9,500 people last year and is expected to attract more
this year.
"We feel this is a great opportunity for Akron to showcase its wonderful
recreational resources," said Suncire. "Players, parents, family and coaches are
here to enjoy not only the game and the tournament, but everything else our city has to
offer."
Firestone Stadium is home of the Akron Racers National Pro Fastpitch team.
"We consider it a privilege to host this tournament," said the Mayor.
