| (09/22/08) - Now that City of Akron crews
have taken care of the most significant storm damage affecting streets and right-of-ways
they are ready to focus on larger, neighborhood yard debris from the storm. Beginning Monday, September 29, public service crews in Akron will
begin collecting large tree limbs, branches and logs that customers place on their tree
lawns. All material must be on the tree lawns no later than midnight Sunday, September 28
and customers must call our 311 center to register for this service.
City crews will make one pass through the city to collect
only those that register. Once collection starts, it will proceed non-stop---approximately
four days---to pick up all storm debris in the city.
These items, said Deputy Service Director John
Valle (VAL ee), must have been produced by the storm. During this special pick up,
we will not be picking up anything but limbs and logs. No bagged items will be
collected.
Neighbors can put these out on the curb, said
Valle. There is no size limit. If residents can get these items to the curb,
well pick them up.
The City of Akron asks its citizens who are interested to
call ahead to the 3-1-1 Call Center and get on the list of persons needing this service.
This will make the operation run more efficiently.
Once we know the locations, we can plan our pick up routes. said Paul Barnett,
public works manager.
He added that crews will be using the same equipment used
during leaf pickup season. For the past week or so, those trucks have been busy clearing
right-of-ways and city intersections of large, fallen trees. Now the vehicles are
available for debris cleanup.
The city will take all of the wood it picks up, grind it
into mulch and use it in city parks as mulch and ground cover.
This is a green project, said
Valle. It is recycling at its core.
The public service director wants citizens to know that
this pickup does not count against the two large-item pickups they are allowed annually.
Were doing this as a service to people who were
affected by the storm last week and have few other options for getting rid of the larger
debris, said Rick Merolla.
City crews have been collecting smaller, bundled yard
debris for the past week from curb service customers. They have also assisted customers by
hauling away their spoiled food.
The debris will be collected the week of September 29. All
storm debris must be on the tree lawns or curbs no later than Sunday midnight September
28. Remember to call 311 or 330-375-2311 to register your address for pick up.
