Skate for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank at Skate-A-Thon 2008

(12/26/07) - Lace up your skates for a good cause! On Thursday, January 3 from 10 am to 10 pm at Lock 3 Park's ice skating rink, skaters of all ages are invited to bring a non-perishable food item for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank to enter Skate-A-Thon 2008 and qualify to win prizes. The Skate-A-Thon is sponsored by the City of Akron Bureau of Recreation Sports & Athletic Division.

To enter, skaters must donate a non-perishable food item or a $1.00 donation. Every dollar received by the Foodbank translates into 7 meals. Skaters ages 12 & under are challenged to skate for at least 1½ hours while skaters 13 & over must skate for at least 3 hours.  Each skater who skates for these times during the 12-hour period is eligible to win a raffle for the grand prize, a $100 Visa Gift Card. Second place raffle winners receive a $25 Visa Gift Card. All skaters who participate and reach their designated time goal also receive Skate-A-Thon gloves.

All food items and proceeds benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. The most needed items are: Boxed Cereal, Peanut Butter, Canned Tuna, Canned Vegetables, Canned Beef Stew and Canned Soup, but a complete list of items needed is available at www.akroncantonfoodbank.org/content.cfm?id=2005. In 2006, the Foodbank distributed over 11 million pounds of food and provided meals for over 163,000 people in need in Northeast Ohio.

Skating hours do not have to be consecutive but must be completed on January 3. Registration is required and children 12 & under must have the signature of an adult on the registration form. For more information, call 330-375-2877 or 330-375-2835.

Lock 3 Park is located at 200 South Main Street in Downtown Akron. Offering free admission and $2 skate rental, the rink is open through February 3 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am - 9 pm and Sundays from 11 am - 6 pm. On Tuesday, January 1, New Year's Day, and Monday, January 21, Martin Luther King Day, the rink is open from 11 am - 6 pm. Visit www.holidayfest.org for more information.
