LEAVES LASTING LONGER,
LEAVING LESS LATITUDE
CITY EXTENDS LEAF PICKUP IN RACE AGAINST WEATHER |
| (11/15/07) - With the autumn leaves hanging
onto their trees later in the fall than expected, it will be necessary for Akron's Street
Cleaning Division to extend the annual leaf removal program past its original end date. Currently , crews are working in wards nine and 10 on a second round of leaf
collections with the intent of providing extended service to these wards Having had their
leaves collected early, many more have fallen in these neighborhoods since then, so crews
will continue with the scheduled pickup and will likely add more based on need.
Public Works Bureau Manager Paul Barnett said today, "Depending on when the
majority of the leaves fall, and on the weather conditions, our crews will be flexible in dealing
with the collection beyond when we originally calculated we would be finished. Count on us
to provide a third round of leaf pickup for wards 1, 9 and possibly 10 in the second week
of December."
Residents should watch for the pickup
notification signs to reappear on tree lawns in those wards that will receive extra
service. Anyone with questions about this service may call the city's 311 call center.
Call 3-1-1 from any residential phone or 330 375 2311 from business or cell phones.
As always, residents may bag and place the bagged leaves in
their trash carts with their normal trash. For those with more leaves than can fit into
the cart, you can bag them and call 311 to schedule a large volume trash pickup.
Each household receiving City of Akron trash pickup is eligible for up to two free
large volume pickups on normal trash pickup day per year. They must call to pre-schedule
for this service.
The City accepts a maximum of 60 special pickups per day, so residents should make sure
to call in advance before all the available slots are taken.
