(05/17/07) - Neighbors Day Akron is a little
more than a week away and is generating some imaginative ideas by residents of the city.May
26 has been designated as Neighbors Day
Akron, Living Together Better as a way for members of the community to get
to know one another better. Patterned after Neighbours Day observed in many European
cities, the Memorial Day weekend event will give neighbors a chance to meet each other,
which the city hopes will promote greater community safety.
Among the events registered so far is one being put on by Chesapeake Pointe Townhomes
on Rosemary Boulevard in East Akron.
Kristopher Jackson from Chesapeake Pointe says the company has backed Neighbors Day all
the way. see flyer (5k pdf))
"We've registered with the City and will close the
street, bring in vendors, games, food, and fun things for kids," said Jackson.
"It'll be a real carnival atmosphere over here."
Akron's Director of Public Service Rick Merolla reminds citizens that every Neighbors
Day event doesn't have to be that elaborate.
"We've heard from folks who will be doing neighborhood cleanup projects to help
fellow neighbors," he said. "Some people are just planning small get togethers
on a deck, patio or porch. We just want to see Akronites get to know one another a little
better."
The city will provide kits that include yard signs, door hanger invitations and other
promotional materials to residents who want to host a Neighbors Day event. Residents may
call the city's help line, 3-1-1, (or 375-2311) to order a kit or pick one up from any community center or fire station throughout the city.
