Lock 3's Father Christmas
reflects those seen at Chriskindl Markets throughout Germany, most notably in Akron's
sister-city of Chemnitz. Although the origins of Santa Claus and Father Christmas
are somewhat intertwined, the biggest difference between these Christmas icons are in
their dress: Father Christmas wears a long, fur-lined hooded cloak, with a wreath of
holly, ivy or mistletoe, whereas Santa wears a coat and hat.
The names Santa Claus and Father Christmas are often used interchangeably in the United
States, but Father Christmas is the name traditionally used in various countries
throughout Europe, from Germany to the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. While
their names may be different, the role of Father Christmas and Santa Claus are the same
throughout the world-to bring gifts and good tidings to children.
Father Christmas is featured as part of Akron's Chriskindl Market, the largest seasonal
Christmas Market between New York and Chicago, with unique handmade wares and food sold by
German vendors, along with a variety of events and entertainment. The Chriskindl Market
and ice skating rink at Lock 3 Park are open Monday through Saturday, 11 am - 9 pm and
Sundays 11 am - 6 pm. The Park is closed on Christmas Day. For details, please visit
