continues with more events, activities and music, including a special celebration of
Hanukkah on Thursday, December 14. Here's what's coming up this week at Lock 3: Hanukkah Celebration at Lock 3
Thursday, December 14
Learn about and celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah on Thursday, December 14 at
Lock 3 Park. A variety of programs highlighting Hanukkah will be offered including
hands-on art activities in the Kinderzone for kids at 5:30 pm, the unveiling of the Countdown
to First Night banner commemorating Hanukkah created by kids from the Lippman Day
School at 6:30 pm, and a special performance by the Lippman Day School Choir at 7 pm. This
program is one of a series of Celebrations of Diversity activities and Countdown to First
Night banners at Lock 3 this winter highlighting different cultures, from the Buddhist

Children's Lantern Parades
Friday & Saturday, December 15 &16
Lantern making begins at 5:30 pm in Lock 3's Kinderzone. Parades begin at 7 pm
Kids are invited to make their own lanterns and then let their creations light the way
as they join in a parade led by a 19 piece band visiting from Akron's sister-city of
Chemnitz, Germany. A holiday tradition at Chriskindl Markets throughout Germany, the
lantern parades were a huge hit at Akron's Chriskindl Market in 2005. Click here for a detailed press release.
German Miner Band Performances
Friday and Saturday, December 15 & 16 at 12:30 & 3:30 pm
Sunday, December 17, 12:30 & 3:30 pm
A crowd favorite in 2005, this 19 piece German Miner Band from Akron's sister city of
Chemnitz, performs in historical costumes reflecting their region's mining tradition.

Countdown to First Night Calendar
The largest advent calendar in the country! Marking the thirty-eight days between
Thanksgiving and the 11th annual First Night Akron celebration on New Year's
Eve, each day, view the dramatic and entertaining unveiling of a 6' x 15' panel decorated
by a local school or community group. The calendar covers the huge wall of the O'Neil's

Kinderzone
New at Lock 3 this winter, the Kinderzone offers hands-on crafts and activities just
for kids. Families can enjoy everything from sing-alongs with Akron musician Rachel
Roberts to special crafts featuring other cultures such as the celebration of Hanukkah on

Celebrations of Diversity
Each Thursday at Lock 3 Park, celebrations highlighting different cultures will be
featured. On Thursday, December 14, the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah is highlighted with a
