19 Piece Brass Band and Children’s Lantern Parades at Lock 3 Park

Lock 3 Live - Holidayfest - Click for more information.(12/03/06) - Lock 3 Park’s Holidayfest continues with more events, activities and music. Here’s what’s coming up this week at Lock 3:

Children’s Lantern Parades

Friday & Saturdays, December 8 & 9 and December 15 &16

Lantern making begins at 5:30 pm in Lock 3’s Kinderzone. Parades begin at 7 pm

Kids are invited to make their own lanterns and then let their creations light the way as they join in a parade led by a 19 piece band visiting from Akron’s sister-city of Chemnitz, Germany. A holiday tradition at Chriskindl Markets throughout Germany, the lantern parades were a huge hit at Akron’s Chriskindl Market in 2005. Click here for a detailed press release.

German Miner Band Performances

  • Friday, December 8, 12:30 & 3:30 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday, December 9& 10, 12:30 pm
  • Friday and Saturday, December 15 & 16 12:30 & 3:30
  • Sunday, December 17, 12:30 & 3:30 pm

A crowd favorite in 2005, this 19 piece German Miner Band from Akron’s sister city of Chemnitz, performs in historical costumes reflecting their region’s mining tradition. Their repertoire includes German music as well as modern and classical favorites. In addition to their performances at Lock 3, the group will perform as part of the Larry Wilgus Christmas Music Spectacular at the Civic Theatre, December 8-10. Countdown to First Night Calendar

Marking the thirty-eight days between Thanksgiving and the 11th annual First Night Akron celebration on New Year’s Eve, each day, view the dramatic and entertaining unveiling of a 6’ x 15’ panel decorated by a local school or community group. The calendar covers the huge wall of the O’Neil’s Parking Deck adjacent to Lock 3 Park. Click here for detailed press release.

Kinderzone

New at Lock 3 this winter, the Kinderzone offers hands-on crafts and activities just for kids. Families can enjoy everything from sing-alongs with Akron musician Rachel Roberts to special crafts featuring other cultures such as the Buddhist celebration of Bohdi Day on Thursday, December 7. Celebrations of Diversity

Each Thursday at Lock 3 Park, celebrations highlighting different cultures will be featured. On Thursday, December 7, the Buddhist celebration of Bohdi Day is highlighted with a special activity in the Kinderzone from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. Click here for more info.

Holidayfest Trolley

Lock 3 isn’t the only place jam-packed with holiday activities–there is a ton to see and do throughout Downtown Akron. Visitors can take the FREE Holidayfest trolley to access event locations such as the Vertical Parade of Homes at Northside, The Akron-Summit County Public Library, E.J. Thomas Hall and more.
