Rabies Vaccination Clinics

(09/07/06) - The Akron Health Department, in our ongoing efforts to protect the health of Akron's citizens, has been sponsoring a series of low-cost rabies vaccination clinics for area pets in cooperation with Pet Guards, Inc.. Because pets often may encounter wild animals, such as raccoons, which may be carrying the rabies virus, making sure that pets are vaccinated against this virus is the most effective way to protect people from possible exposure to rabies. Each of the scheduled clinics will be vaccinating both dogs and cats for a minimal fee of only $5.00 per pet.

The next rabies vaccine clinic for pets is being held this coming Monday, September 11, 2006, at the Reservoir Park Community Center in Goodyear Heights. The Reservoir Park Community Center is located at 1735 Hillside Terrace, which is across the street from Seiberling School on Brittain Road. The rabies vaccine clinic will be open from 4:00 pm through 8:00 pm. No appointment will be necessary. The final rabies clinic for 2005 will be held on Monday, October 23, 2006 at the Patterson Park Community Center in North Akron from 4-8 pm.

For more information, please contact Aixa Bakuhn, Rabies Program Coordinator for the Akron Health Department, at 330-375-2405.

Additional Rabies Prevention Tips:

  • Have pets vaccinated and keep them current on their vaccination
  • Do not pet, feed or adopt wildlife
  • Teach children to avoid wild animals or unknown animals (strays or other people's pets)
  • Keep your animals on your property. Pets that are allowed to roam are at higher risk for rabies exposure
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors
  • Cover garbage cans
  • Keep wild animals out of your home by securing doors, windows, cap chimneys with screens, and
  • close off any openings in porches, basements and attics
  • Call your doctor if you have been the victim of a bite. Call your veterinarian if your pet fought with or received a bite from a wild animal.
  • Report all animal bites to your local health department
