| (07/31/06) - Mayor Don Plusquellic announced
this morning that four of the city's neighborhood community centers are being equipped as
cooling centers for residents seeking relief from the stifling heat. "So many of us live and work in air conditioned environments,
we may not realize how dangerous this oppressive heat truly is for those who do not,"
said Plusquellic. "The forecast is calling for at least a couple more days of this,
so we are providing safer surroundings for citizens who need them."
The four being specifically set up as cooling centers today from noon - 6 p.m. are each
centrally located on the east, west, north and south sides of the city:
Summit Lake Community Center
380 W. Crosier Street
Akron, Oh 44307
Patterson Park Community Center
800 Patterson Ave.
Akron, Oh 44310
Joy Park Community Center
825 Fuller Street
Akron, Oh 44305
Lawton Street Community Center
125 Lawton Street
Akron, Oh 44302
The city's other community centers have planned activities already scheduled, but are
available as well for those needing a place to cool down. Mayor Plusquellic encourages
citizens who use the cooling centers to maintain order and keep the safety of others in
mind. Cooling centers will be open on a day-by-day basis.
Citizens should also consider utilizing their neighborhood library for respite. Most,
if not all in the city of Akron are air conditioned.
As always, anyone with any questions should call Akron's 3-1-1 Call Center. Press 3-1-1

Center operator.
