Does your family have a best friend? If not,
you better show up for the Adopt-a-Thon at the Akron Dog Park on October 15, 10-4 p.m. BARC,
Better Akron Recreation for Canines and local area rescues are teaming up to place our
beloved homeless into good homes. All rescues are welcome and the event is free. The event
promotes proper animal ownership and offers adoptable pets rescued or displaced in Summit
and surrounding counties.
During the event, families will be able to view pets up for adoption, play with them
and investigate the personalities of the animals. Local rescues participating are Precious
Lives, Heaven can Wait, Summit County Animal Shelter, Friends of Pets and the Humane
Society. As many as four other rescues might participate in the day's events as well. Pop
and water will be sold throughout the day, the proceeds will benefit animals
rescued from the Katrina and Rita Hurricanes.
Most animals can be adopted for a very small fee. The adoption fee covers the animal's
food, healthcare and toys while at the rescue or in a foster home. Each organization will
help you find the pet best suitable for your home and lifestyle.
Also during this event, the City of Akron will offer the Avid Microchip for pets to
Akron Residents. Both cats and dogs can be chipped. Local veterinarians insert the chips
at the event and assist with the registration. The City of Akron offers the microchip
program to Akron residents for only $15. Don't worry, if you are not an Akron resident,
you can still participate in the program for only $50. Microchips help keep your family
pets safe and easy to identify in case they are lost, stolen or an emergency occurs. You
can find out more about Microchips on the day of the event. Payment can be made by check
or cash.
The Dog Park is located at
499 Memorial Parkway, near the Cascade Valley Ohio and Erie Canal
Towpath Trailhead. The park is situated on the west side of the gravel parking lot and
covers almost 2 acres, which are licensed to BARC by the City of Akron.
BARC is committed to creating safe, fenced-in spaces in the Greater Akron area where
dogs can exercise and play together off leash and socialize with fellow canine companions
while their owners enjoy the park-like setting. BARC promotes responsible dog ownership
and healthy canine behavior to help strengthen the canine-human bond through
socialization, exercise, companionship, learning and fun.
