MAYOR NAMES LABOR LEADER TO CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
Akron mayor Don Plusquellic today announced the appointment of an experienced labor leader to the three-person Akron Civil Service Commission. 49-year-old Stephen A. Stock is the assistant business manager of Local 306 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

"Steve has more than 20 years experience in organized labor and will be an important voice on the Commission as it carries out its duties to oversee hiring, termination, and discipline matters for the City and the Akron Public Schools," Plusquellic said.

The appointment will fill the position left vacant upon the death of long-time member James Frost and must be approved by Akron City Council, which will receive legislation within the week. Stock will begin his work after council acts on the mayor’s request.

Stock was a journeyman electrician from 1983 until 1998 when he joined the IBEW as an organizer. He oversees the organization of non-signatory contractors and electricians not represented by the union. Since 1999, Stock has served on the City of Akron’s Board of Electrical Examiners. He is a delegate to the Tri-County Building & Construction Trades, and has been active with the Akron Labor Council.

"I am looking forward to this opportunity to be of service," said Stock. "I appreciate the mayor’s confidence in appointing me to this position."

In addition to his labor-related activities, Stock is a member of the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and Workforce Advisory Committee that is helping to oversee the Akron Public Schools’ long-term re-building project.

Civil Service commissioners receive compensation of $33 per hour for 10 hours each month, although the job often requires more time which commissioners volunteer.

Steve attended the University of Akron. He and wife Suzanne live in North Akron and have a daughter and two grandchildren.
