MAYOR RECOGNIZED BY OHIO NATIONAL GUARD FOR EMPLOYEE SUPPORT
Mayor Don Plusquellic was honored today by the Ohio National Guard for the City of Akron’s support of employees serving in the military. Lt. Col. Patrick Gibson of the Ohio Army National Guard recognized Mayor Plusquellic at the mayor’s weekly news conference.

The mayor said, "The men and women who are on active duty are making a tremendous sacrifice. Their families back home often struggle financially and emotionally. We, as an employer, do all we can to show them we appreciate them and support their families."

expertise helping with household repair projects, lawn mowing, landscaping, auto repair and other necessary services in their free time. Come winter, snow removal will no doubt be added to the list of services provided to families who request assistance.

Mayor Plusquellic has also extended indefinitely the time employees serving in the military receive pay and full benefits. Pay is calculated so that when combined with military pay, employees receive what they would if they had been at work for the City of Akron. They also continue to receive full benefits.

Lt. Colonel Gibson, Commander of the 112th Engineer Battalion of the Ohio Army National Guard, said this morning, "We appreciate Mayor Plusquellic’s sensitivity and understanding in this matter. Our men and women are dedicated to serving their country and not all have the good fortune to receive what amounts to full pay and benefits while they are on active duty."

Lt. Colonel Gibson, Sgt. Major Darrell Weenink, Capt. Roger Lewis and Capt. Michael Chastain presented the mayor with the Patriotic Employer Award from Employer Support of Guard and Reserve, a non-profit organization affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense.
