Akron, OH This year, Mother Nature
had it in for Fathers Day. The weather did not cooperate with the Antique,
Classic & Collector Car Show at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens. Heavy rains and
flooded roads in Northeast Ohio prevented automobile owners from making their annual June
appearance in Akron. It was the first time anyone can remember the show being cancelled.
"It certainly hasnt happened in the time I have been here," commented
Terry Bieri, Director of the Business Office and 20-year employee of Stan Hywet. Typically
anywhere from six to eight thousand automobile enthusiasts make their way out to the
former home of F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, each
Fathers Day. "We are all exceedingly disappointed," noted Harry P. Lynch,
President and CEO, "But the rain was really coming down and there was just no way we
could expect the car owners to brave the elements."
The Ohio Region Classic Car Club of America and Stan Hywet
Hall and Gardens rescheduled the 43rd Annual Antique, Classic &
Collector Car Show for Sunday, July 2, 2000 from 9am to 4:30pm. Any advance tickets
sold for the earlier June 18th date will be honored on July 2.
Full Classics are intended to be the central focus of
the recently rescheduled show. According to the Classic Car Club of America, a Full
Classic is an upscale automobile with specific features built between 1925 and 1948
in limited quantities. Although these cars are intended to be the highlight of the show,
there may be more than 20 additional classes of cars on display July 2. Pat Meyer, a
member of the Ohio Region Classic Car Club of America, believes, "the diversity of
the show is a big draw." Nearly 100 years of production and many different makes of
cars are represented.
Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens gates open at 9am. The
cars create an informal parade as they take their places on the Great Meadow. Judging
begins at 11:30am and first, second and third place prizes for each class are awarded at
4pm. Traditional prizes for this event are silver Revere bowls in graduated sizes based on
judging status.
After walking through the rows of vintage cars, Children
are encouraged to participate in their own judging, a tire roll and other special
automobile-themed activities throughout the day.
Admission to the Antique, Classic & Collector Car
Show is $7 for adults. Pre-pay tickets are available for $5. Admission is $5 for Stan
Hywet Members ($4 pre-pay) and free for children under 12 years of age accompanied by an
adult. Manor House tours are available for an additional $4.
