News Release

The stage is being set for City Faire, a community festival of the arts, which will debut August 4-6 in downtown Akron. For three days, Main St. between Market and Bowery, including Cascade Plaza, will be transformed into a work of art itself with colorful banners and "sky sculptures."

Designed to showcase the talents of our community, City Faire will feature music, dance, theatre, visual arts, culinary arts, digital arts and great activities to entertain and spark the imagination of children. It will provide a setting for Ohio artists and arts institutions, local restaurants and area performing artists to display their talents while offering an entertaining, educational family experience.

There will be a main stage featuring nationally recognized and local performers to appeal to a variety of musical tastes. Fine art exhibits will transform a stretch of Main St. into a unique gallery-like setting for artists whose work has been selected by jury as well as an area for emerging artists and a tent for artists who simply wish to display their work. Chefs from area restaurants will demonstrate their culinary skill at the Gourmet Plaza, there will be demonstrations of computer-generated artwork for the 21st century and the Kids' Creation Plaza will feature nonstop activities to participate in, entertain and inspire.

A "Call to Community" will offer non-profit agencies and organizations an opportunity to show off their ingenuity by developing a way to tell their story through the visual, performing, computer, children's or culinary arts. Another option for these groups is to provide a service which event organizers would otherwise have to purchase.

City Faire has been designated an official event of the,175th birthday of the City of Akron and also coincides with the 160th birthday of the County of Summit. Founding partners of the event are United Disability Services, the Downtown Akron Partnership, Akron Community Foundation, United Way of Summit County and the City of Akron, First Energy Foundation and Omnova Foundation have signed on as the first key sponsors of the event.

Gary Knuth, executive director of United Disability Services, describes the agency's involvement by saying, "We have been active in supporting the literary and visual arts for people with disabilities for 20 years through publication of Kaleidoscope: International Magazine of Literature, Fine Arts, and Disability. We see our role in City Faire as a logical extension of that effort."

According to Pat Munka, executive director of the Downtown Akron Partnership, "We share the feelings of the other four City Faire founding partners, that the new vitality in downtown Akron makes it a perfect backdrop for a family event showing off the talents of our community."

Who's involved in City Faire?
Founding partners
United Disability Services, the Akron Community Foundation, The Downtown Akron Partnership, United Way of Summit County and the City of Akron have all signed on as founding partners of the event.

Volunteer leadership
A small group of community leaders with specific expertise have been recruited to volunteer their time and talents to make City Faire a community-wide event that will appeal to a cross section of the community. Many individuals and organizations have been contacted and have agreed to assist with the planning, organization and implementation of the festival. Organizations committed to providing leadership include:

The Akron Art Museum - Akron Summit County Public Library - Inventure Place - The Akron Civic Theatre - Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron - The Beacon Journal - The Akron Public Schools - Summit County YMCA - The Akron Arts Alliance -  Aircraft Braking Systems -Pizza Hunt/Hallrich Corporation - First Energy - First Merit - WKSU - Lockheed Martin - Luna Pie - IBM - Among Friends/MODO - Info Line, Inc./Project Connect - Ameritech - Summit County Government

How can other organizations and agencies participate?
With an anticipated attendance of 30,000+ people during the three-day event, there are several great promotional opportunities available. Through a "Call to Community," organizations and agencies have three different opportunities to participate:

By creating an offering that relates to the arts - Agencies and organizations are invited to suggest ways they could share their story, show off their services or tell about the contributions they make to our community. The only stipulation is that their offering must relate to the visual, performing, computer, children's or culinary arts. A panel of judges will review agency and organization suggestions and select for participation those that best fit the event theme. The extent of creativity in presentation and benefit to nonprofit organizations is unlimited.

Provide a service - Agencies and organizations can provide a service which event organizers would have to purchase. For example, one group might choose to sell "snowcones" in the Kids Creation area, another might provide litter patrols for a fee (already a budget necessity) or another agency may choose to host a performance. Event organizers will work with nonprofit organizations to identify appropriate activities.

By becoming an event sponsor - Agencies and organizations may make a financial contribution at a variety of levels.

How will City Faire be promoted?
The City Faire marketing committee, consisting of seasoned professionals, is hard at work developing a cohesive marketing plan which will include creating promotional materials; press releases and public service announcements; television, radio and newspaper advertising; and securing media sponsorships.
