1900 Census – black population at 525

August riot starts the century – City Hall dynamited – Columbia Hall set afire

Booker T. Washington made an appearance in Akron early in the 20th century.Solving the "Negro Problem"

  • Many blacks coming from the South, were not adjusted to urban lifestyle and became involved in crimes
  • Booker T. Washington made appearance in Akron
  • Official records showed the Negro blotted out 55.5% of Negro illiteracy since gaining freedom
  • Negroes gained from education – not one graduate of Hampton or Tuskegee in jail
  • Rev. R. A. Jones - Only real solution through education
