Akron, Ohio is an award-winning city with a storied past and a promising future. The City of Akron Seal was designed to reflect the strong sense of pride we feel for our community. Along the top of the blue outer ring we recognize Akron's two All-America City awards bestowed in 1981 and 1995 by the National Civic League. The red, white and blue color scheme is used to symbolize our status as an All-America City. Along the bottom of the Seal is the phrase, "City of Invention" in honor of the home of the National Inventor's Hall of Fame at Inventure Place. The use of this phrase has become so popular since the adoption of the new seal that "City of Invention" has become the unofficial motto of our city. Our citizens were instrumental in attracting the Inventor's Hall of Fame to Akron, from Washington D.C., by rallying community support as we competed with other cities for this coveted institution. The recognition of this collaborative endeavor, by the National Civic League, was integral toward the designation of Akron as an All-America City. You will notice 10 stars on the Seal. These represent the 10 wards throughout the City of Akron. The shield in the center blends the All-America City Seal with the emblem of one of our city's most beloved institutions recognized throughout this country and many others --- the All-American Soap Box Derby. Designed and adopted in 1996, the City of Akron Seal is proudly displayed on City vehicles, signs, banners, flags, stationery and pins.
