WATERSHED MANAGEMENT

RESERVOIRS

IMAGE: Resevoir

Included in the property owned and managed by Akron inside the Upper Cuyahoga Watershed are three reservoirs, East Branch, Wendell R. LaDue Reservoir and Lake Rockwell Reservoir. The reservoirs’ main purposes are to provide flood control to downstream areas, replenish the river’s flow during dry periods of summer and fall and maintain an ample supply of available drinking water for the Akron residents and customers at all times. Both the land and the reservoirs provide significant natural habitat for many species of plants, animals and, insects.

Lake Rockwell Reservoir is the primary source of Akron’s drinking water supply. Because of its importance, this area is highly restricted. There is absolutely no trespassing, no fishing or recreation permitted at Lake Rockwell at any time. Lake Pippin is also considered an area of high importance and is restricted as well. Keeping these waters restricted helps to ensure the highest quality water for both environmental quality and the production of drinking water.

Mogadore Reservoir is a fourth reservoir in the City of Akron’s water supply system. This reservoir is not part of Akron’s drinking water supply and is used primarily for recreation. The property and recreation at this reservoir is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). ODNR can be reached at http://www.ohiodnr.com.
