of Akron Public Works, Parks Department has accepted the challenge of The Greenprint for
Akron by looking at the way it mows city-owned property"Lawn mowing season means
it’s time to take a hard look at what we use to mow grass," said Greenprint
Director Paula Davis.
The City of Akron decided eliminating mower emissions, reducing noise pollution and
having clean, easy operations was important so it purchased a Neuton rechargeable electric
mower.
Service Director Rick Merolla will be given a demonstration of the new mower at 10 a.m.
at Charles Goodyear Park across from the Municipal Building at 166 South High Street.
The mower
features a 19" cutting radius and packs enough power in one charge to cut the average
one-third of an acre lawn. Starting it requires a simple squeeze of the handle.
Neuton takes eight hours to get a full charge then it runs up to an hour on one charge
and is 95% recyclable. According to the EPA, gas powered powers contribute up to 10%
of the nation’s air pollution.
Reducing the city’s dependence on fossil fuels is a key tenant of The Greenprint
and the city’s efforts to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted.
