(01/09/09) - Brine and salt have been
deployed for the oncoming snow heading into the Akron area tonight and into the weekend.Akrons
Public Service Department has also deployed its highest level of manpower in response.
Deputy Service Director John Valle said this afternoon, "We have 51 primary routes
and can provide one truck and an equipment operator on each primary route."
Primaries are mostly the Citys highways, main roads and severe hills.
Public Works Manager Paul Barnett called the level 4 alert. "We call a level 4
whenever one inch or more of snowfall is expected and conditions are such that we expect
roadways to be snow covered and slippery. At the end of the snow event, we will shift into
22 secondary routes."
Secondary routes are generally our collector streets, brick streets and less severe
hills. Upon completion of the 22 secondary routes, crews start the 102 residential routes.
Starting at noon tomorrow, January 10, will initiate a snow parking ban.
That means cars must be moved off of side streets and residential roadways so that
plows can get the work done quickly and safely.
Akrons 311 Call Center will be in operation Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
