| (01/09/09) - It is essential funding for the
homeless in the city of Akron. A portion of the Citys annual budget request for
emergency shelter will be going before Akron City Council this Monday, January 12. The
request comes from Planning Director John Moore and seeks to utilize funding from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist in Akrons Emergency Shelter
Grant Program. "This funding is a smaller
portion of what we need to assist local efforts to aid the homeless," said Moore.
"It, along with other federal monies, provides us with important resources for
rehabilitation of structures and operating expenses for local agencies."
The City of Akron will enter into agreements with the
following local agencies to carry out this years program:
Emergency Shelters
ACCESS
Salvation Army
Shelter Care
Transitional Shelters
Battered Women Shelter
H.M. Life Opportunity Services
Legacy III
Community AIDS Network
ACCESS Transitional
Community Health Center
Security Deposit Program
Fair Housing Contact Service
The agencies will utilize the grant funding for operating
costs, rehabilitation and---in the case of the Security Deposit Program---for operating
and escrow funds for security deposits.
The amount of this particular grant is $305,000. HUD also
delivers another, more substantial annual grant forpermanent supportive housing and
transitional housing. Akrons planning department expects to hear word on that in the
coming weeks.
Akron City Council meets at 7 p.m. at 166 South High Street
in the Municipal Building.
