(09/05/08) - Akron’s annual remembrance
of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 will be held this year at the High Street
Christian Church. A diverse spiritual group will convene to offer reflections in words and
music.A Commemoration from the Heart will focus on people’s personal reflections
of how the events of that day affected them. Speakers will include Pastor Knute Larson,
Akron Fire Chief Larry Bunner, Captain Demetrius Stanford from the Salvation Army and
readings by representatives of the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths.
Mayor Don Plusquellic will participate with remarks on how 9/11 affected him and the
city that day. Attendees will also hear from the United Way’s Vice President for
Marketing Michael Gaffney, and Dan Colantone, CEO of the Greater Akron Chamber.
Music will be provided by the High Street Christian Church and by the choir at
Firestone High School, directed by Sally Schnieder.
The Reverend Dr. Joseph L. Eubanks will welcome attendees to the ceremony at his
downtown church, which begins at noon, on Thursday, September 11, 2008.
Members of the City of Akron PeaceMakers youth organization will act as ushers for the
services, and the Salvation Army will be providing those in attendance with lunch.
