(07/04/08) - Akron police officers who work
with federal agents on certain drug enforcement cases would again be reimbursed through
legislation going before Akron City Council July 7, 2008.The United States Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA) has agreed in the past to share the cost of local law
enforcement officers who assist in Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF)
investigations and prosecutions.
The legislation essentially renews the reimbursement program.
Costs covered would include overtime and other authorized expenses incurred by Akron
police in these cases.
Mayor Plusquellic said the cooperation between the two is important. "We welcome
the DEAs expertise in fighting crime and are more than willing to provide our own
experienced law officers when needed. It helps all of us when we do," he said.
The officer or officers have yet to be selected for the task force. Those who are must
work full time on the investigations in order to be eligible for overtime pay.
