| (04/02/08) - Akron, OH In recognition
of the importance of conserving energy to curb global warming, Mayor Don Plusquellic and
County Executive Russ Pry announced that many buildings operated by the city and county
would turn off all non-essential lighting from 8-9 a.m. on Earth Day, Tuesday April 22.
The announcements, as part of LightsOut Akron, are the first commitments where offices
will be turning off non-essential lights during daylight hours in recognition of Earth Day
and as a statement towards energy conservation. In addition, Copley High School has
announced that it will be turning off non-essential office and class room lights from 8-9
a.m. as well and encourages other schools in the area to do the same.
LightsOut Akron, organized by Sierra
Clubs Portage Trail Group serving Summit and 9 other Ohio counties, is an effort to
build awareness of easy actions that everyone can take to reduce energy usage and curb
global warming. Through LightsOut Akron, people are being asked to turn off non-essential
lighting at home, in schools and in the workplace for one hour on Earth Day, Tuesday April
22nd, as a simple step that can lead to a long-term habit. Homes will be turning off
non-essential lighting from 8-9 p.m.
Schools and workplaces will be turning off lights from 8-9 a.m. or other appropriate
times.
