MELON DROP BENEFITS FOODBANK
SCORE ONE FOR NEWTON AT LOCK 3 FARMER’S MARKET

(09/20/07) - Credit David Letterman with the idea. Credit the Beacon Farmers’ Market at Lock 3 with making it a benefit event for the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank.

For $1 this Saturday, September 22 Lock 3 and the Farmers’ Market are offering an opportunity to drop over ripe, un-sellable produce from the sixth level of the parking deck next to Lock 3, onto targets below made of recycled materials. The melons and tomatoes, which would otherwise go to waste, are being donated by the farmers at the Farmers’ Market for the festivities, which begin at 10 a.m.

The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank provides 11 million pounds of food annually to pantries, shelters, and hot meal sites serving 163,000 people in eight counties.  For every $1 donated, the Foodbank is able to provide seven meals.

"This is time for everyone to have some fun," said Akron Deputy Mayor for Administration Dave Lieberth, "and raise money for the Foodbank." Lieberth added, "We also encourage folks to bring canned goods with them Saturday for donation to the Foodbank."

Each week at the Farmers’ Market, a different fruit, or vegetable has been featured. "Ironically," said Suzie Graham, director of children’s programming at Lock 3, "this week we’re featuring the apple."

Graham noted that the kids this week at the Sprouts children’s play area at the Market will be "experimenting with Newtonian Physics dropping various items from the deck and making bubbles."
