Record Attendance at Lock 3's Holidayfest
Winter Activities Continue at Park through February 19

(01/11/07) - For the third season, the ice skating rink and Chriskindl Market at Lock 3 Park proved to be a top destination for holiday entertainment in Northeast Ohio. From November 24 through First Night Akron on December 31, over 70,000 people visited Lock 3, a 17% increase from the previous record breaking season in 2005.

Ice skating was again a popular part of the Lock 3 experience with nearly 20,000 people strapping on skates, an increase of 27% from 2005. The Akron History Exhibit and American Toy Marble Museum inside O'Neil Commons also had a wildly successful season, drawing a number of school and tour groups along with families and other visitors. Over 28,000 people took advantage of the museum's offerings, with visitors from over 100 Ohio cities, 40 states, and 9 foreign countries signing the guest register.

In response to popular demand, winter activities at Lock 3 continue through February 19. The ice rink-Ohio's largest seasonal skating venue at 80' x 120'-is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 am to 9 pm; Sundays, 11 am to 6 pm; and 11 am to 6 pm on Monday, January 15 for Martin Luther King Day and 11 am to 6 pm on Monday, February 19 for President's Day. Admission to the rink is free and skate rental is $2.00

The Akron History Exhibit and Marble Museum will also be open Thursdays and Fridays, 5 to 8 pm; Saturdays, 11 am to 8 pm; and 12 to 6 pm on Sundays and Martin Luther King Day and President's Day. Admission to the museum is free. Additionally, the Kinderzone, a special area for kids inside O'Neil Commons, will continue to offer hands-on crafts and activities Thursdays through Saturdays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm and Sundays from 2 to 3 pm.

Special event programming continues, including a Chili Cook Off on Friday, January 19 from 11 am to 9 pm with City of Akron Police and Fire houses going head to head with their chili recipes. The event will allow the public to taste and choose a "People's Choice" chili, and all proceeds will benefit the Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron's Burn Unit.

On Saturday, January 20, FirstMerit Bank, Holidayfest's Presenting Sponsor, will host FirstMerit Day. From 11am to 3 pm, visitors to the park receive a free FirstMerit Lantern Tool Kit. No purchase or sign up is required but the lantern tool kits are limited to one per family.
