The new service will bring high-speed wireless Internet access -
better known as WI-FI - to all areas of the branch locations. WI-FI is short for wireless
fidelity, which enables library customers to access the Internet at speeds of 50 to 100
times as fast as a dial-up connection.
"This is an important new service, especially for business people and
students," said library director David Jennings.
The addition of this new free technology is not unlike the first computers that were
installed in the early '80s. Those computers were used to gain information and knowledge;
two decades later, customers are using the Internet in the same way.
Customers must go through the library's proxy server to gain access to the Internet.
The server adheres to the Library's Internet viewing policy, and certain applications may
not be available.
