| (08/21/06) - It's not too late to experience
"Life in the Past Lane," as you take your journey on Akron's History Trails.
This is a fun, family-friendly activity that hundreds have already enjoyed. You may pick up your passport, guidebooks, and instructions on your
first visit to any one of our participating sites: (attachment:
locations)
Here is what you will need to do to get started on your
historic hike. First, pick up your printed instructions and:
- The brochure, Historic Akron - Inventive.
Industrious. Inspired. This will provide you with a map identifying 18 historic
places in Akron. Most are in Downtown. This also includes explanations of what you'll find
at each site, the address, web and phone information, normal hours, and accessibility.
- The brochure, Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of
Akron's Landmark Buildings, describes the five historic properties that opened in
1931 at the height of the Great Depression. All five of these buildings should be visited
to complete your passport.
- Your Historic Downtown Akron Passport.
There are 22 blocks inside, one for each historic site we're celebrating this summer.
Enjoy your visit, and learn about Akron's historic past.
Each site has its own special inked stamp that the attendant will place in your passport.
Since some locations are closed, look for the answer to the question for each of those
buildings that is printed on the reverse side of the instruction sheet. Then, take your
answer(s) to the Akron History Exhibit at Lock 3, where the attendant will stamp your
passport for each question correctly answered.
You have until Saturday, September 16 to
visit all 22 locations and have your passport stamped for visiting each location. Lock 3
will be hosting the City's Reading Festival, for the second year, September 16. We invite
those who've taken the history tour to bring their passport with all the stamps to the
Reading Festival.
Each person who has achieved all 22 stamps will receive a
free Akron history poster. The poster is City Photographer Bruce Ford's photo illustration
of the sculpture, "Marking The Trail of the Portage Path".
Each completed passport also automatically enters
participants in a drawing for great history prizes: the nooks & crannies tours of
Akron's historic places, Akron history books and DVD's and historic memorabilia of our
city.
The Headquarters for the History Trails Passport project is
the Akron History Exhibit at Lock 3.
