Fire raced through the former home of many Goodyear
blimps. The airdock at Lockheed Martin caught fire late Thursday morning (5/18/06),
and Akron firefighters brought flames under control by 12:45 pm. Fire officials say
there were no reports of injuries in the fire at the nearly 1,200-foot-long airdock. Lockheed Martin Corporation is using the landmark
structure to build a prototype airship for the military. Preparations were still
being made to build the vessel to monitor communications in about a year. The
company says the project will remain on schedule. About a dozen crews fought the fire.
Akron fire department spokesman Ed Sturkey says there was no immediate indication of what
caused the fire. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company sold the airdock where it built blimps
at least 20 years ago. |
