CRIMEFIGHTERS WANTED
ANSWERING THE CALL

Click to enlarge. The City of Akron has embarked on a fresh and aggressive recruiting drive to fortify its police force by hiring as many as 30 new officers. Crimefighters Wanted is the campaign’s message for men and women interested in a career that the City touts as one that rewards honor and discipline.

"We offer one of the strongest benefits packages in the state, if not the nation," said Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic. "I am proud of our citizens, too. They have made an exceptionally generous commitment to protect not only those who protect us, but their families as well, with an array of valuable benefits."

"I think this approach is just what we need," said Police Chief Michael Matulavich. "Sure, these jobs are tough; they’re certainly dangerous at times, but being a police officer can be incredibly rewarding and even fun."

Among the qualifications candidates must meet:

  • 21-31 years old
  • Accredited high school or vocational school graduation or equivalent
  • Physical and medical standards
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license

Candidates must also pass written tests, physical skills test, medical and psychological tests, background investigation and polygraph

The City of Akron also awards bonus points for those recruits who meet a residency requirement, served in the armed forces of the United States and were honorably discharged and/or completed accredited college course work.

Beginning the first day in the academy, recruits are immediately on the payroll with a salary of $42,393 annually. The City’s generous benefits package offers comprehensive medical insurance, life insurance at no cost, paid vacation time, sick leave and 14 paid holidays.

The campaign was developed by Hitchcock Fleming and Associates (hfa), an Akron full-service marketing communications firm. The recruitment campaign focuses on radio and print advertising. A poster and palm card were also developed.

Pat Kunklier, director of public relations for hfa said, "Our interviews with potential recruits and current police officers were revealing. Clearly, people here are excited about the prospects of a career in law enforcement. Crimefighters Wanted will propel that enthusiasm for the APD."

Applications are being accepted through June 30, 2006. For details, go to www.akroncops.org or call 330-375-2727 (toll free: 1-888-588-5417).
