| Our customers have noticed taste and odor
issues with Akron water since early December. The raw water in Lake Rockwell has a musty,
earthy odor that commonly occurs due to algae activity. This odor is more common in the
summer months, but has also been known to occur in colder weather. The current odor in the raw water was likely caused by a higher than
normal rain and snow melt in Geauga County in late November. This high -sediment water
reached Lake Rockwell via the Cuyahoga River in early December and likely contributed
nutrients for increased algae growth.
Another contributing factor may have been an inversion of
the water in Lake Rockwell due to the sudden temperature change that occurred around the
same time. The Akron Water Plant has made all available adjustments to the water treatment
process, including adding powdered activated carbon.
The quality of the treated water has improved over the last
few days and is returning to normal. Akron anticipates continued improvement in its
drinking water quality throughout the service area over the next few days.
Akron wants to assure its customers that the treated water
meets all Ohio EPA requirements and is safe to drink and use. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may have caused. |
