Mayor Don Plusquellic today announced he is
submitting legislation to Akron City Council to establish a college scholarship fund for
Akron Public School students endowed with money from speeding citations delivered through
the Automated Mobile Speed Enforcement camera system. The mayor, who will submit the
legislation at the next council meeting Monday, December 12, said today that all civil
penalties collected for speed violations through this system will first be directed
into a fund to be used for additional traffic-control devices, warning signs, public
relations efforts and other expenses related to the new traffic surveillance system.
The balance of the funds collected will then be used for college scholarships and be
administered by the deputy mayor for public safety.
Plusquellic said this afternoon, "We wanted to find a good investment for these
funds, and earmarking them for public safety and for our childrens future is the
best investment I can think of."
