Akron Inventor Honored with da Vinci Award
An Akron man, recognized by Mayor Don Plusquellic at his August 25 news conference has received a prestigious award for his high-tech invention. Lee Eisinger was honored in Dearborn, Michigan as one of this year’s da Vinci Award winners for his HomeSaver Enterprises Stove Sensor that shuts off unattended electric stoves. The da Vinci Awards celebrate universal design and technology that benefit persons with disabilities.

The da Vinci Awards™ were created through collaboration between The Engineering Society of Detroit and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), Michigan Chapter. It was the desire of both organizations to create a nationally recognized award in the inventive spirit of Leonardo da Vinci, whose scientific inquiry and mechanical inventiveness were centuries ahead of his time. The presentation of their awards, to be made at a gala evening event – Dinner with da Vinci – is to be held this Friday, October 29 at the Ritz-Carlton in Dearborn.

A 55 year old business owner, Eisinger invented the HomeSaver Enterprises Stove Sensor as a matter of necessity. "In fact", says Eisinger, "Mother was the necessity of this invention. Alzheimer’s disease was robbing her of her ability to live independently in her own home, especially putting her personal safety at risk while trying to cook." The stove sensor connects to an electric stove and shuts off the power if left unattended for eight minutes. In addition to Alzheimer’s victims, the device has many features which assist the hearing and visually impaired as well as individuals with developmental and other disabilities.

"It’s an honor to be recognized for doing something good to help others," Eisinger said.

Sponsors of this year’s dinner are Trilogy, Daimler Chrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Lear, Microsoft and FORTUNE.

Proceeds from this awards dinner will benefit the efforts of the Engineering Society of Detroit and the National MS Society to ensure an accessible environment for all individuals with disabilities through education, services, research and the continued support of both organizations’ missions.
