HOSPITALS & SCHOOLS TO INTEREST STUDENTS IN HEALTHCARE CAREERS
Area students in grades 6 through 12 can learn more about careers in hospitals and other healthcare settings by attending a Health Care Career Night on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Central-Hower High School, 123 S. Forge St., Akron. A Health Care Career Night is a collaborative effort of Akron General Medical Center, Akron Children’s Hospital and Summa Health System working with Akron Public Schools, Summit Education Initiative, as well as Kent State University, The University of Akron, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), and other area schools. Its aim is to increase the number of individuals in health care, especially minorities, and to address the critical shortage of healthcare workers.

The healthcare industry is facing significant shortages, which are expected to worsen over time, especially as the population ages. According to the Akron Regional Hospital Association, health care is among the top 10 career areas where there are more positions than people to fill them. Among the disciplines where shortages are most critical are nursing – both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses – as well as radiology technologists.

A Health Care Career Night will give students an opportunity to learn more about careers in hospitals and other healthcare settings, and the education and training needed to achieve those careers. Health professionals from local hospitals will be on hand with exhibits and demonstrations in the areas of: Biomedical Engineering, Emergency Medical Services, Information Systems/Medical Records, Laboratory, Medicine (Physician), Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiology, Radiology, Rehabilitation, Security, Safety, Sports Medicine and Nutrition Services. Information on volunteer opportunities at local hospitals will also be available. Students who attend the career night will receive a booklet printed by the Akron Regional Hospital Association containing more than 70 healthcare careers along with responsibilities, salaries, educational requirements, employment outlook and financial aid.

This career night represents one of a number of initiatives under way locally to attract students into healthcare careers. Another initiative is HealthCare in Progress (HIP), which allows 8th graders in Akron Public Schools to participate in a series of three full-day workshops at each of the Akron hospitals to explore nine different careers.

No advance registration is required for A Health Care Career Night. For additional information, contact the Office of Career Education, Akron Public Schools, 330-761-3131 or log on to apscareers.com
