During Akron Mayor Don
Plusquellics weekly press conference--- this week at Western Reserve Controls, Inc.,
--- Deborah Eisinger, president of HomeSaver Enterprises introduced the HomeSaver1, a
patented device invented in Akron that will be produced in Akron. HomeSaver1 shuts off an
unattended electric stove. Plusquellic commented,
saying, "While many companies today are out-sourcing manufacturing, the Eisingers
have chosen to manufacture their line of products through Western Reserve Controls, a
local company that got its start in our own Industrial Incubator back in 1991. We very
much appreciate their keeping this product a local one from conception to
completion."
"With our manufacturing company in Akron, we can
provide jobs in our community and maintain our commitment to providing quality products
and services to our customers," said Deborah Eisinger.
Joining Eisinger in this announcement was her husband, Lee
Eisinger, the inventor of the HomeSaver1. Together, with family members and supporters of
the HomeSaver1, they unveiled the product Eisinger created to keep his aging mother in her
own home for as long as possible. It was when, as Eisinger puts it --- mother became the
necessity of invention --- that he developed the HomeSaver1 to protect her from potential
fires when she would leave her stove unattended for long periods of time.
"I wanted to preserve my mothers quality of life
and independence as long as possible," Lee Eisinger said. "I knew I
couldnt control how Alzheimers would affect her, but I could control some of
the devices in her home that might present a danger to her, and offer her a modicum of
safety."
After several years of development, and with the assistance
of the Western Reserve Controls staff and Tony OLeary of Akron Metropolitan Housing
Authority, the Eisingers have introduced what will be the first in a line of products
dedicated to creating safer environments in which individuals can maintain their
independence and preserve their quality of life.
HomeSaver Enterprises is pleased to count Akron
Metropolitan Housing Authority, Alpha Phi Alpha Homes of Akron and the Columbus YWCA as
three of their initial customers.
"Our products offer peace of mind for those of us in
the sandwich generation as we struggle to care for our parents as well as our own
families," Deborah Eisinger said.
In addition, communities and organizations that provide
affordable housing for both seniors and individuals with previous stove fires can install
this proactive, safety backup to reduce the risk of future fires. One HomeSaver client
even provides residential services for women with mental health issues.
"Our product is designed to serve as a passive device.
It requires no programming or intervention on the part of the user," Lee Eisinger
said. The HomeSaver1 uses both visual and audible cues to alert the user. Visual cues,
using the colors of the traffic light, help the hearing impaired while audible alerts
assist the visually impaired. These features, couple with the passive nature of the
device, make it ideal for memory impaired, developmentally delayed, or brain-injured
individuals.
The HomeSaver devices are designed to shut off appliances
even when the person using them doesnt remember to. The HomeSaver1 is a small,
electrical device attached to the stove that disconnects power to the stove if left
unattended for eight minutes while cooking. HomeSaver1 will attract attention to the
unattended stove with a flashing light and audible alert. If no one returns to the stove,
HomeSaver1 will disconnect the power to the stove. Normal cooking can resume when a
persons presence is detected by the sensor and the person manually turns the stove
controls to the "off" position. HomeSaver1 then returns the stove to its ready
state, meaning the stove is off, the power is connected, and normal cooking can resume.
HomeSaver1 is easily installed without having to purchase
new appliances. Each device comes with a step-by-step instruction guide and helpful
illustrations and is available for purchase at a cost of $300 per unit. This investment is
a major savings for families when compared to the cost of assisted living or a live-in
companion, not to mention the satisfaction of remaining in ones own home.
HomeSaver Enterprises currently is developing a HomeSaver2
for gas stoves and a HomeSaver3 for the 120 volt appliances used throughout your home
the toaster oven, coffee pot, curling iron, and space heaters, to name a few.
