City of Akron Awarding $500,000 to Social Service Programs
Akron City Council has approved an award of $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds to be distributed among local agencies to assist lower income residents. These funds come from an entitlement from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The grant awards will be made to 14 agencies for the following services:

Akron Community Action Agency: Child Assault Prevention $ 45,000
Akron Urban League: Summer Day Camp $ 11,000
Alchemy: After-School Tutoring Program $ 22,000
Fair Housing Contact Service: Fair Housing Activities $100,000
Info-Line: Information & Referral $ 40,000
Info-Line: Lifeline For Seniors $ 35,000
International Institute: Cross-Cultural Counseling $ 12,000
Lock 3 Summer Arts: Youth Art Program $ 44,000
Mature Services: Senior Activities $ 50,000
Northeast Ohio African-American Health Network: Health & Wellness $ 36,000
Pregnancy Care of Summit County: Cribs for new mothers $ 13,000
Weathervane Playhouse: Theater Workshop $ 19,000
Westside Neighborhood Development Corp: Home Security $ 18,000
Victim Assistance: Crisis Intervention $ 35,000
Administrative Allowance $ 20,000

TOTAL $ 500,000

Through the Community Services Program, the City is able to assist agencies providing a variety of social services to the Neighborhood Development Areas.

Mayor Don Plusquellic said, "I can’t say enough about the folks who work on the front lines of social service in our community. We would be a much different community without their dedication and commitment to others."
