Late Thursday evening, a member of the
administrative staff of the City of Akron was stopped by an Akron police officer. Jeff
Fusco, deputy service director, was subsequently charged with driving under the influence
of alcohol. At the time of the traffic stop, Fusco was driving a city-owned vehicle.Fusco,
44, and his wife were out to dinner Thursday night until just before midnight when he
arrived at city hall to pick-up his city car to drive home. He was stopped by the officer
between city hall and his home.
Mayor Don Plusquellic issued a statement saying, "This morning, I have suspended
Jeff Fusco from his employment with the City of Akron. The length of the suspension is
indefinite. As is the case with all citizens, Mr. Fusco is entitled to the presumption of
innocence until such time as he may be adjudicated as guilty of any offense. Once my
investigation has been completed or the adjudication in his case is final, appropriate
discipline will be imposed consistent with the facts and with city disciplinary actions
that have occurred under similar circumstances."
The city of Akrons policy with regard to the use of its vehicles prohibits an
employee from driving a city-owned vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
