The first business that will call the new
University Polymer Research Park its home is making plans to begin construction later this
year. Akron City Council will, at its July 21, 2003 meeting, consider approving the ground
lease agreement that will open the door for Aris Holdings to occupy 1.6 acres of
City-owned land on the east side of Broadway Street on Bartges Street extension (just
south of Cedar Street).Thirty acres of the former Conrail railroad right-of-way was
purchased by the City of Akron for industrial redevelopment with an emphasis on
polymer-related businesses. The first company to move onto the site will produce
thermoplastic elastomer extrusions and perform die cutting of plastics, rubber, foam, film
and paper products. Such products are used in a wide range of applications including
ATMs, business machines, computers, construction, industrial and marine products,
automotive, recreational and medical equipment.
The planned development will consist of an initial 10,000 square foot manufacturing
facility. Future additions are planned of approximately 10,000 square feet within five
years. The company plans on having at least 10 employees initially, and as many as 30
within three years of starting operations.
Corporate Counsel for Aris Holdings, Jason Butterworth, said the company is looking
forward to being in the heart of where some of the best polymer research in America is
being performed. Work on the new facility should begin late this year and be completed by
spring of next year.
