| Mayor Don Plusquellic, Ward 7 Councilwoman
Mary Ellen McAvoy and Ken Radigan, executive director of Humility of Mary Housing, Inc.
have announced an agreement to build a 40-unit housing complex for seniors in the
Firestone Park area of South Akron. The building will be located east of Glenmount Avenue,
south of Waterloo Road and the South Plaza shopping area. The complex will contain 40 one-bedroom units, approximately 540 square feet
each. They will be available to seniors who have up to approximately $21,000 of adjusted
income. Rents will not exceed 30% of a persons income and will include all
utilities. Units will be air-conditioned and include a refrigerator and stove, with
wall-to-wall carpeting in the bedroom and living room. The two-story brick building will
have an elevator and laundry facilities and community rooms on each floor.
Radigan said," We are pleased that we will be able to
provide seniors in South Akron an opportunity for new housing within their own
neighborhood. I would like to particularly thank the mayor, his staff and Mary Ellen
McAvoy for their efforts and assistance in helping secure the site. Without them, we would
not have been able to take advantage of this opportunity."
Mayor Plusquellic commented, saying, "My
administration has committed itself to ensuring that a wide variety of new housing be
developed in our community. I appreciate Humility of Mary Housing Corporation and its
initiative and Councilwoman McAvoy for suggesting the site. The City will be contributing
funds from its federal HOME entitlement to the Humility of Mary Housing Corporation for a
portion of the land acquisition cost."
Councilwoman McAvoy said today, "I am delighted to see
that the first building for senior living in Firestone Park will be in a very attractive
building close to all of the services people could want."
The Humility of Mary
Housing Corporation is a non-profit housing development organization established by
the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, a Roman Catholic order of nuns. They have
developed similar Ohio housing projects in Wellington, Lorain, Youngstown and Garfield
Heights. They are affiliated with H.M. Life Opportunities Services, which operates
transitional housing programs in Akron and Northfield.
