PRESS RELEASE
Akron Health Commission
March 20, 2003

Announcing the Appointment of J. Michael Moser, M.D., M.P.H.
The Akron Health Commission announces that Dr. J. Michael Moser has agreed to become Akron’s next Director of Health. Dr. Moser is expected to begin his tenure as Director of Health on June 2, 2003. He will succeed Dr. C. William Keck, who will be retiring at the end of March, 2003. Dr. Jeffrey Yatsu, a physician currently on the health department staff, will serve as Interim Health Director for the months of April and May.

Dr. Moser was raised in Covington, Kentucky and attended college at the University of Dayton where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He acquired his Doctor of Medicine degree, with

distinction, from the University of Kentucky, and his Master of Public Health degree with a major in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina. He is board certified as a specialist in Internal Medicine, as well as General Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Moser has served as the State Health Officer and Director of Health for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment since 1999. Previously, he has worked in several different teaching institutions and health departments, including the Ohio Department of Health, The Ohio State University School of Medicine, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, the Kentucky Department for Health Services, the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, and the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

It has been common for Dr. Moser to work in academia and public health practice venues simultaneously. This experience should serve him well as Akron’s Director of Health because he will be working full-time for the City of Akron and part-time for the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) in the Division of Community Health Sciences. This will continue the arrangement established during Dr. Keck’s tenure when the Akron Health Department became formally associated with NEOUCOM as an official public health practice teaching site for that institution.

The Akron Health Commission believes Dr. Moser is particularly well suited to serve as Akron’s next Director of Health, and is extremely pleased to welcome him and his family to our community.
