| City of Akron Awarding $329,000 in
Emergency Shelter Grant Funds |
| Mayor Donald Plusquellic announced the City
of Akron's proposed award of $329,000 in Emergency Shelter Grant funds. These funds come
from an entitlement to the City by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Funds will be distributed among local agencies to assist the homeless. Through the
Emergency Shelter Grant program the City is able to assist agencies serving all segments
of the population: single men and women, women with children, two parent families, persons
with AIDS. The majority of the funds went to transitional shelters. In 2002, the homeless
agencies receiving funding from the City provided shelter to 3,000 persons.
Emergency Shelter Grant funds will be used for rehabilitation activities to improve the
safety and quality of the structures, the purchase of equipment and furnishings by the
providers, and for operating costs and services to the homeless in the community. Services
will assist the homeless in becoming independent, self-sufficient and productive residents
of our City.
The grant awards are proposed to 10 agencies this year with the legislation being
introduced to City Council January 13, 2003.
Proposed grants are for:
- Emergency Shelters
- ACCESS, Inc. - $144,800
- Salvation Army - $17,000
- Shelter Care/Safe Landing - $4,200
- Transitional Shelters
- Battered Women's Shelter - $20,000
- H.M. Life Opportunity Services - $63,000
- Community AIDS Network - $15,000
- Legacy III - $25,000
- Community Health Center - $5,000
- Fair Housing Contact Services - $25,000
- Community Support Services-$10,000
"The homeless shelter agencies not only provide safe and sanitary housing in our
community they also provide much-needed supportive services to homeless families and
individuals in providing them the tools necessary to get them off the streets toward
self-sufficiency. I am proud that the City is able to be part of the rebuilding
process," said Mayor Don Plusquellic.
