Akron, Ohio, Friday, November 2, 2001 - The City of Akron Police and Fire departments held a press conference today at Fire Station #5 to endorse Issue 64 for Akron Public Schools. Police Chief Michael Matulavich, Fire Division Chief Charles Gladman and Mayor Don Plusquellic emphasized the importance of education and the American responsibility to give Akron’s children the tools to succeed in today’s world.

"The City of Akron police and fire officials not only protect our city," said Superintendent Sylvester Small, "they are vital partners with our school system."

The Akron Police Department has numerous programs in the schools and neighborhoods that enable Akron police officers to build relationships and interact with Akron Public Schools students. DARE officers spend 45 minutes in the fifth-grade classrooms teaching students about drug prevention, building self-esteem, reducing violence and resisting gangs. DARE officers also visit K-4 classrooms for five weeks, building relationships with students by eating lunch with them and participating in recess activities. The students recognize DARE officers as friends and share many experiences and problems with them.

The Akron Fire Department works hand in hand with school safety officials. Fire officials respond immediately to protect, advise and assist the schools to avoid fire emergencies.

The Public Education Office of the Akron Fire Department visits all Akron Public Schools second-grade classes with the Fire Safety House, a three-room house filled with smoke, and demonstrates how to escape a burning building. They visit all kindergarten classes teaching fire safety with Sparky’s ABC’s; Match Play; and Stop, Drop and Roll. "Fire and police officials are American heros respected for their bravery, honor, pride and dedication of service to others," said Small. "Their endorsement today shows that they are also willing to protect our schools."
