On Monday, November 5, all four lanes on West Market Street will be open to traffic. Roadway construction began on May 22, 2000 and as of November 5 the roadway construction work is substantially complete – 200 days ahead of schedule. There may be short-term lane closures over the next few weeks during non-peak traffic hours for the installation of retaining walls, trees, sidewalks and steps.

The roadway construction project limits were along West Market Street from Highland Square to the Innerbelt, and included full depth pavement replacement, new curb, sidewalks, tree planting, retaining walls, as well as the relocation of above ground utilities to below ground. The cost of the construction of this project was approximately $7.3 Million.

Construction of the roadway project was phased in a way so as to limit the affect to the business and property owners along West Market Street. The project was divided into three sections and the work in each section was completed before moving on to the next construction zone. Residents and business owners were kept updated on the progress of the project through monthly newsletters, press releases and the City’s Website.

Interesting facts about the project:

  • 11 miles of new wiring (not including the miles that Edison installed)
  • 230 trees will be planted
  • 34,000 square feet of bricks
  • 3 miles of curb
  • ½ mile of sewer
  • 10 miles of underground conduit
  • 1 ¾ miles of new pavement (from Portage Path to Main Street)
  • New traffic signals between Rose Boulevard and Summit Street are timed to 25 mph

Prior to the road construction project, approximately 8000 feet of a new 16 inch water main was installed in West Market Street from Casterton Avenue to the Innerbelt. The water main replacement work occurred at night from August 1, 1999 to January 5, 2000. The cost of the water main installation was approximately $1.3 Million.
