The City of Akron is ready to open its first skateboard park. Designed by City of Akron engineers and local children with an interest in skateboarding, the state-of-the-art 19,000 square foot facility is located adjacent to Akron Fulton Airport and next to the BMX Bike track, Derby Downs and several ball fields. Mayor Don Plusquellic and City Council-at-Large representative John Otterman will officially open the park this Saturday morning at 8:30 (September 15, 2001).

Kenmore Construction built the skateboard park in 90 days at a cost of $332,140. The facility uses fiberglass reinforced concrete to provide an extra- smooth surface for skateboarders. The park is expandable to accommodate future growth of the sport. It also has separate areas for beginners and more advanced skaters.

Mayor Plusquellic credited Otterman, saying, "John had the vision for this project. He secured the funding and the site and then had the Youth in Government Council (made up of local high school students) recruit a group of kids with an interest in skating to help our engineers with design ideas. It really is a wonderful collaboration and a facility of which we are proud."

Otterman said, "It was enjoyable to watch the design process with these young people and City of Akron engineers. The kids really helped this take shape in a manner all skateboarders will be able to appreciate. The community will enjoy this park for many years to come."

A professional skate team will perform at Saturday’s opening from 8:40 until 9 a.m. At 9, skating will be open to the public. It is a year-round facility that is free and open to the public.
