National Car Commercial To Be Shot In Akron
Route 59 a draw in luring challenging filming of stunt driving

Akron, Ohio – The City of Akron and Greater Cleveland’s Film Commission announced that filming of a national car commercial would begin tomorrow in Akron on Route 59. "We realize a little governmental cooperation with film and television companies can go a long way in bringing dollars and jobs to our area which otherwise would have gone elsewhere," said Mayor Donald Plusquellic.

A Los Angeles based commercial production house arrived last week to begin setting up their temporary production offices in downtown Akron. Producers contacted Greater Cleveland’s Film Commission in June seeking location photos of highways with cities in the background that could be controlled for filming. The film commission sent photographs of Route 59 to the producers and the highway was ultimately chosen by the production company as one of its primary shooting locations for the commercial.

Greater Cleveland’s Film Commission is a regional economic development organization that promotes northeast Ohio as a location for film and television production in order to bring new dollars to our economy.

"Our job is to draw the film industry to northeast Ohio by demonstrating our tremendous range of potential filming locations," said Chris Carmody, President of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. "Route 59 is a highly unusual asset in bringing film and television dollars here since it can be easily controlled for extended periods of time," Carmody continued. "In addition the production company is very impressed with how cooperative and efficient the City of Akron has been to work with and is excited about the upcoming shoot," added Mr. Carmody.

Greater Cleveland’s Film Commission recently launched the Shoot Northcoast Campaign in an effort to bolster regional commercial production. AT&T and McDonald’s spots shot in northeast Ohio in June. Pete Lambros, Business Manager of I.A.T.S.E. 209 said, "Each $250,000 spent in northeast Ohio on a commercial generates a day’s work for 25-35 skilled trades people, numerous local actors, and brings dollars for hotel bed nights and other services." I.A.T.S.E. 209 is a statewide local, which covers unionized crew positions for film and television. "It’s great to have movies come in but commercial work is the bread and butter for our membership," concluded Lambros.

"We are very happy to be the host for the commercial shoot and are taking the necessary steps to minimize the inconvenience to the public while Route 59 is closed for the filming," said Mayor Donald Plusquellic. Mayor Donald Plusquellic concluded, "We look forward to hosting more film and television projects in the future as our region is promoted to the industry."
