AKRON SEEKS LIMITED SEWER RATE INCREASE |

City of Akron Service Director Joe Kidder announced today that the administration will ask City Council to approve a 1% increase in sewer rates for its 71,499 residential customers in Akron, for 1999. Sewer fees are the primary source of revenue to maintain and improve the sewage collection system and Water Pollution Control Station. If approved, the increase would amount to $.27 (27-cents) more on the average monthly bill and go into effect April 1, but customers will not see the increase until the arrival of their May bill. Commercial and industrial rates within Akron will be slightly higher. Average usage is 1,000 cubic feet per month. Sewer rates are computed using a federal EPA-mandated formula. The considerations that go into determining rates for Akron customers include the average per customer usage, the average flow to the Water Pollution Control Station and the actual expenditures last year to maintain and improve the sewer system. "Due to lower operating expenditures," said Kidder, "we have only had to request a 1% increase in rates over the last two years. Last year, there was no increase." EPA-mandated construction projects, forced the City of Akron to increase sewer rates by a total of 25% in 1996 and 1997. The legislation will go before Akron City Council at its March 15 meeting.
