Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic announced today that the City of Akron will be contributing $15,000 to the Christmas in April Program of Summit County. Funding will come from the City's Community Development Block Grant. Christmas in April * Summit County is a nonprofit, year round program that helps repair and rehabilitate the homes of low-income elderly and disabled homeowners in the Akron - Summit County area. The program relies on volunteer labor and donations of cash, supplies and materials to provide warm, safe and dry living conditions for area residents.

Since 1995, more than 1,500 volunteers have repaired 38 homes of elderly or disabled persons in Summit County and numerous organizations and businesses have supported the program through donations of cash, materials and labor. It is anticipated that 23 homes will be served by the project this year - 17 within the City of Akron and six within the County. Over 100 applications were processed and the homes were selected in January, 1999. The anticipated project date is April 17, 1999.
